- Sport, physical education and recreation are practiced in Cuba as a means of expansion and solidarity among the population and exaltation of the highest human values.
- At the triumph of the Cuban revolution, on January 1, 1959, there were around 800 physical education teachers in Cuba, a number that decreased considerably due to the subsequent immigration of professionals to the United States. Due to this the new government dictated emerging measures in favor of improving the existing situation regarding the practice of sport in the Island. Among these measures we can mention:
Foundation on February 23, 1961 of the INDER (National Institute of Sports Physical Education and Recreation), as the main body responsible for the planning, direction and execution of the programs of the various sports activities throughout the country and in the international arena.
- Under the Martian principle of non-commercialization of sports, the elimination of professionalism was carried out in 1962.
- The slogan that would guide the Cuban sports movement, The right sport of the people, turned into the beginning of the Revolution, giving special importance to training and overcoming sports professionals.
ESEF School of Physical Education is created
- The INDER as an organization focuses its work on the massive extension of sport throughout the Island to promote its development and the spread of physical activity to all levels of the population, from children to the elderly. It also has as fundamental objectives the improvement of the sports participation system as well as the deepening in technical and organizational aspects, closely related to the achievement of a superior quality in the services that are provided to the population and the extreme use of each of the facilities Sports
- The most representative sports facilities of the Capital are the Latin American Stadium, the Pedro Marrero Stadium, the Pan-American Complex, the Ramón Fonts and Kid Chocolate Polyvalent Rooms, the Sports City. The High Performance Training Centers Cerro Pelado and Giraldo Córdova Cardín and the EIDE Mártires de Barbados.
- From the Material point of view, the Capital has an infrastructure for the practice of Sports, Recreation and Physical Culture, currently there are (15) Municipal Sports Directorates, (73) Sports Combined, (1) Computer Center, ( 1) Sports Medicine Center (1) EIDE, EPEF and UCCFD, facilities that have allowed us to achieve the results we currently display.

As an inseparable part of sport given its influence in obtaining optimal results, medicine plays a key role in the Cuban sports movement fighting against the scourge of drugs that not only prevents the practice of sport in a healthy and clean, but also It also hinders the education and culture of athletes, coaches and sports leaders. For this, Cuba has the fifth Anti-doping Laboratory in America and available to Third World countries. Cuba also has available to the countries of Latin America the Institute of Sports Medicine, which enjoys great prestige, playing a role of great importance in the maintenance of the health of the athletes and in the rehabilitation of the same.
